Beating Heart LED Pendant

We got an email a few days ago from Charles Platt, MAKE contributor editor and author of our best-selling book, Make: Electronics. He was tickled because he’d gotten an email from Quinn Dunki. She had read his book and used his “Pulsing Glow” circuit (experiment 14) to create this “beating heart” pendant jewelry. She writes:

While reading through Charles Platt’s excellent book Make: Electronics, I came across this nice little circuit for making a gentle pulsing LED. I built it for fun, and was struck by the “humanness” of the pulse, but couldn’t figure out what to do with it. Later I found a heart-shaped tag on some pants I had bought, and well, this is the result. I opted to use mainly scrap parts salvaged from various sources. I liked the hacky recycled feel that gave it.

I took Charles’ circuit, and added a second LED for some symmetry. The bob under the pendant is the power source. The pendant’s chain is part of the circuit, so the clasp becomes the on-off switch.

Nice work, Quinn! MAKE readers may be familiar with Quinn’s work. She’s the chief geek behind the iPhone games Trucks & Skulls and Beam Chess (it’s chess… with lasers!). She’s a programmer, an electronics geek, AND a race car driver? I think I’m in love!

3D-Printed Bike

Eureka Magazine has a profile of this sweet ride, the whole thing “printed” from laser-sintered nylon powder.

The ‘Airbike’ is made of nylon but, according to EADS, is strong enough to replace steel or aluminium and requires no conventional maintenance or assembly. It is ‘grown’ from powder, allowing complete sections to be built as one piece; the wheels, bearings and axle being incorporated within the ‘growing’ process and built at the same time. Because it can be built to rider specification, it requires no adjustment.

Midland GXT5000 Two Way Radio Product Announcement

GXT5000.jpgWe have just received some information from Midland regarding their new products for 2011, and I’m excited to share it with everyone. Later this year, Midland is going to introduce the GXT5000 two way radio. The GXT5000 will be a professional quality two way radio designed to communicate with standard consumer radios using FRS and GMRS frequencies.

With the GXT5000, Midland is answering the call of many who frequently use GMRS radios and need a product that is more durable than what you can typically find for a two-pack. This radio meets military specifications, has an aluminum cast frame, is waterproof, shock and dust proof to IP67 standards, includes a long life lithium-ion battery, and features an impressive 5 year warranty! Midland also includes a zippered storage case, which helps keep the radio safe and adds to the professional look.

This radio is sure to be an instant hit with some GMRS enthusiasts as well as those who use radios for “tough” applications where the radio may be subject to some abuse. Really, anyone who plans to use their radio on a frequent basis, instead of just for the occasional camping trip or such, should at least consider this radio.

GXT5000-Pack.jpgAccording to the FCC report, the Midland GXT5000 has 4 watts of power. Because of the fixed antenna (a requirement for radios supporting the FRS frequencies), I do not expect the range of this radio to be quite as good as a similarly powered business grade radio, but I would expect that it will equal or surpass the range of current consumer models. Of course, we will have to wait until we get our hands on one of these to confirm this.

Along with the professional quality comes a professional price tag. The suggested retail price of the GXT5000 is 9 per radio. This is a significantly higher price than any other FRS/GMRS radio that we sell, as you would expect with such a quality upgrade. The GXT5000 is expected to be available in June, 2011.

How to play Piano chord progression

23

Piano chord progressions are considered as the simple movement from one online piano chord to the other online piano chord in some harmonic framework. The piano chord progression is translated in language that can be understood very easily. This is done especially for the beginners and for the music students. This implies the playing of the online piano chords in a right and a pleasant way that is “harmonically” correct.

To learn the piano chord progression you will need to take help from the major scale notes correctly. They also help you to construct the online piano chords by the combination of the various scale notes together. Once you know the scales and the piano chords correctly you can then put your knowledge to learn the online piano chord progression. It has been seen that there are many different ways of combining the piano chords so that you can form a music piece. You need to focus on the popular online piano chord progressions only.
Combining of the piano chords basically refers to the movement of the online piano chords. Piano chord progression is based upon the major scales and on the scale tone online piano chords. This implies that the 1st, 5th and 4th tones will be the Major piano chords, and the 2nd, 6th and 3rd tones will be the minor piano chords. Here the 7th tone is referred as the diminished online piano chord. Generally it has been seen that the diminished piano chord comprises of the 1st, flatted third (b3rd), and flatted fifth (b5th) tones from the major scale. This therefore implies that the 3rd and the 5th tones are lowered by a single half step.

The major, minor and the diminished are called as the 3-note or the triad online piano chord progressions. For the 7th piano chord progression, the 1st and the 4th tones are called the Major 7th online piano chords, while the 2nd, the 3rd, and the 6th tones are known as the minor 7th piano chords. Remember that the 5th tone is known as the dominant 7th online piano chord while the 7th tone is known as the half diminished 7th online piano chord.

A dominating 7th piano chord requires the combination of the 1st, 5th, 3rd, and or seventh tones the b7th from the major scale. If you lower the 7th note by 1/2 steps then you can get the dominating piano chord. To get a 1/2 diminished 7th online piano chord you will need to combine the 1st, flatted 3rd, flatted fifth, and the flatted seventh tones notes of the major scale.

Scale tone piano chords, are another type of the online piano chords that comprises of the  tones from a particular scale like C, D, F#, etc. the scale tone piano chords are present in both the major and the minor keys. These types of piano chords follow certain rules. Here the first online piano chord is always the major, while the second online piano chord is always the minor, the third online piano chord is always the minor, then the fourth piano chord is always the major, fifth piano chord is always the major, sixth chord is always the minor and the last seventh piano chord is always the diminished.

Cycling Fans Missing the Boat…

22

2010
20:43

The women's peloton is full of quality riders and quality people.

Sadly, the news dwarfing the Tour of California has me questioning whether I have been subjected to another dope induced fraud in men’s cycling. I will probably never know for sure. But I do wonder why I continue watching the men.

Like everyone, I weigh investments in returns. I know that my investment in becoming a fan and supporter of women’s cycling has given me a great story to believe in while watching the men has made me a skeptic.

Women who dedicate themselves to competition for mere pennies because they are driven by a desire to push themselves to the extreme limits of physical accomplishments are worth following. They don’t have the option of earning enough money in endorsements that they will travel to races in private jets; instead, they pack air mattresses in case the host housing doesn’t have enough beds for everyone. Its the reason I can watch NCAA basketball, but couldn’t tell you the last time I watched the NBA. Passion.

This isn’t to say that men’s cycling is without passion, but there are so many question marks surrounding it that it has last credibility. Until the athlete’s themselves choose to change the culture, we will continue to be subjected to the fraud of having to watch an event tainted by cheating. I haven’t had to experience that while following women’s cycling.

The women’s peloton is full of credibility. The big challenge for women is not finding a sneaky pharmacist in Spain. It is finding a part-time job that will allow them enough time to train and race because their salary doesn’t cover the rent. It is fighting the politics that earn them a spot racing for the women’s national team while knowing that USA Cycling pours much more money into men’s development than women’s. They earn race purses and salaries that are a fragment of what men earn and still find the time and energy to support causes that go beyond themselves.

Despite all of those challenges, the women’s peloton continues to pull off a race that is competitive, tactical and exciting to watch. Did you see what Colavita-Baci pulled off on stage 2 of the Tour of the Gila? Have you been following the Tour De L’aude? Or were you distracted trying to siphon through the public relations damage-control efforts of the men’s teams – which probably costs more than the total funding for any US women’s team. I’m sure this is not what their sponsors had in mind when they were seeking publicity for their brand.

By the way, don’t just take my word for it. I just published an interview with Michael Engleman on www.uswcdp.com. Listen to why a former men’s pro cyclist has dedicated himself to supporting women’s cycling. There is still room for you to get on board too.

Michael Engleman Discusses Supporting Women’s Cycling

Michael EnglemanAfter a successful career in professional cycling, Michael Engleman found himself working with the women’s side of the sport. Once there he discovered a peloton full of athletes with elite talent. One thing that stuck out to him was the depth of intelligence and dedication that these women possess. The other thing that called out was the disparity, on countless levels, of what is offered to women cyclists when compared to the men’s side of the sport. He founded the US Women’s Cycling Development Program to build a network of people who could help close some of the gaps that stand in the way of a woman cyclist reaching her potential. Michael sat down with Team Car Radio to discuss how he became involved in women’s cycling and why he has dedicated himself to the cause.

Things to Consider When Buying a Youth ATV

21

There are many things to consider when buying an ATV for a child. First you must determine whether the child is mature enough to go alone, and the safety is. If you think your child can take on the responsibility of an ATV, you need to choose the best for them. The most obvious consideration when choosing an ATV for a child is great, although there are other important factors to consider.
The size of the child determine the size of the ATV you buy. You want to drive the most bike you can comfortably continue, so that by adulthood and is no more than get it. Most ATV manufacturers make smaller models for children so be sure to ask when you visit the dealer.

Security is probably the biggest concern of parents in the purchase of an ATV for your child. While driving an ATV can be an ideal for a child, you must ensure that your child follows safety precautions and the ATV you purchase has all the necessary security. Most people require drivers under 18 to take a safety course before buying a bike and it is always a good idea. You have to see how stable and powerful the ATV model is that it is considering buying.
The engine size goes for sure how children can not control an ATV, as well as adults. The more powerful an ATV, the greater the likelihood of problems.
If you are unsure what type of engine is best for your child, will be most retailers have someone who can explain all the different engine specs to you. If you buy an ATV dealer somewhere else, there are many online information you can determine a safe engine type for your child.

Let’s face it, is more mature the child nor likely to bear more stress and place on their ATV than an adult because they are not as advanced driving. You want to make sure the ATV you purchase for your child is reliable and maintenance is not complicated. When you buy your bike with a big company to a dealer, chances are that you get a warranty and the ATV reliable.
This does not mean you can not find you, a reliable ATV other, but generally have the best dealer warranty and after sales service. You must also consider the cost of spare parts for the purchase of ATV.

The last thing you should consider buying a youth ATV is cost. Like any major purchase, you should shop around for the best price and make sure you keep your budget. Depending on how long the child will likely use a youth ATV take adult role model, perhaps better buy a bike and used to save a larger model, as the child grows.
