Waterproof vs. Splash Proof

Most inexpensive waterproof radios you’ll find are actually splash proof, or “water resistant.” There’s nothing wrong with that as long as you understand the limitations. I mention it because when I’m reading waterproof portable radios reviews I see  a fair amount of negative reviews based on the fact that a given radio won’t survive a direct stream of water, say from a shower head. They are fine, however, with light splashing in the shower or outside in a very light rain.

If you want a true waterproof portable radio, you need to be prepared to spend quite a bit more money than you would on the cheaper “water resistant” radios. The way to tell if a radio is truly water proof is to look for an IPxx, JIS, or NEMA rating. For example, here is a list of JIS ratings and what waterproofing level they correspond to:

  • JIS 0 – no special degree of water protection
  • JIS 1 – resistant to vertically dropping water
  • JIS 2 – resistant to dripping water at an angle of up to 15 degrees from vertical
  • JIS 3 – resistant to falling rain at an angle of up to 60 degrees
  • JIS 4 – resistant to splashing water from any direction (“splash resistant”)
  • JIS 5 – resistant to direct jetting water (“jet resistant”)
  • JIS 6 – sealed against direct jetting water (“watertight”)
  • JIS 7 – sealed against immersion at a depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes (“submersible”)
  • JIS 8 – sealed against continuous submersion under pressure specified by the manufacturer (“submersible plus”)

It should be noted that the rain and splash protection provided by JIS 3 and JIS 4 are much greater than that provided by most of the less expensive waterproof portable radios you’ll find for sale. Unless rated otherwise, assume these less expensive radios fall somewhere between JIS 0 and JIS 1.

Perfect Optimizer – What A Windows Registry Cleaner Program Can Do For Your Windows PC

21

2010
20:58

Perfect Optimizer is a Windows registry cleaning and optimizing program. So what does it do and why is it needed? Very simply, in spite of the use of software protection tools, most computers become infected with some forms of invasive software. Whether it is Malware, Spyware, Adware or Viruses, it is still a potential threat to your computer. Once installed on your computer, these programs will leave information in your Windows Registry. Even if the program is later removed or uninstalled, they will probably leave some old and broken keys in the registry.

We also tend to download games, and other free software products. Many of these programs have their own installation utilities, which will upload unwanted files onto your computer, and also put entries into the Windows registry. The more of these unwanted entries get into your registry, the more likely that your computer will develop problems in the future. The best way to avoid or fix some of these problems, is to obtain a Windows Registry cleaner software program to periodically scan your registry, delete unwanted items, speed up your computer.

Too often, we see our computers having failures, like the infamous blue screen announcing a Windows failure. Most of these are identified as errors in memory or on your hard drive. In reality, they are the result of errors in the Windows registry. Once you run a registry cleaner program, you will find that your computer will speed up, and system errors will decrease in number.

There are many reasons why you can have registry problems. With a few simple steps, a good reg cleaner will scan your entire Windows registry for any invalid entries. The reg cleaner will then provide you with a list of the errors that were found. Your next step will be to decide whether to clean each item yourself, or to have the registry optimizer automatically repair them after making a backup of the current registry. To give you some guidance on selecting a good Windows registry cleaner to use, here are several options that you should definitely look for:

Backup and Undo – The most important step in cleaning your registry takes place before you even start the process. To be safe, it is critical to first make a backup copy of your current registry. You don’t want to see your registry be ruined by an error, and have no way of restoring the previous version.

Scheduler – Too many people get the idea that registry repair is a one time operation. That is not true, because after you are finished repairing your Windows registry, you will go back to using the Internet, and new programs will be installed on your computer. The process of registry deterioration begins immediately, so you should plan on using Perfect Optimizer on a regularly scheduled basis.

Automatic Scan – If you want to control the registry scan yourself, then this is the option that will give you that ability. This is for those people who have sufficient technical knowledge.

Custom Registry Scans – This option would be used if you are looking for specific types of system errors. Of course, you need to have sufficient technical knowledge about Windows and computers to know which types of errors to look for.

Manual Cleanup – This option will give you the opportunity of fixing registry errors yourself. To facilitate this process, the registry repair program will provide a list of errors upon completion of its scan or your registry.

As noted earlier, use of a registry cleaner like Perfect Optimizer should be done periodically, on a scheduled basis. Once you clean up your registry, future downloads and surfing will bring new entries into your registry, with all the potential problems that you just resolved. To keep your Windows computer running at top speed and efficiency, you will need to do periodic registry repair scans on an ongoing basis.

Spend the time or money now for a registry cleaner to save you even more time or money later down the road. If you don’t clean your computer to fix your registry than you are going to be in a whole world of trouble. Never allow a file to be placed on your network until it has been scanned.

The IP and JIS Specification for Water/Dust Resistance

12

Two way radios see use in many types of environments. We’ve sold radios to responders to the flooding caused by hurricane Katrina, soldiers to use in the deserts of Iraq, and most everyone in between. As you can imagine, we frequently get questions about how well certain radios hold up to exposure to water and dust.

There are different levels of waterproofing and dust proofing. For example, a radio that is resistant to a light rain will not necessarily hold up when submerged in a pool of water. When shopping for a product, it is important to know how resistant the product is to water and/or dust, and fortunately for us there are standards in place for measuring such things. There are two specifications for which we commonly see radios rated: JIS and IP.

Japan Industrial Standards (JIS)

The JIS scale measures water resistance with levels ranging from 0-8.

  • JIS-0 – No special protection
  • JIS-1 – Vertically dripping water shall have no harmful effect (Drip resistant 1)
  • JIS-2 – Dripping water at an angle up to 15 degrees from vertical shall have no harmful effect (Drip resistant 2)
  • JIS-3 – Falling rain at an angle up to 60 degrees from vertical shall have no harmful effect (Rain resistant)
  • JIS-4 – Splashing water from any direction shall have no harmful effect (Splash resistant)
  • JIS-5 – Direct jetting water from any direction shall have no harmful effect (Jet resistant)
  • JIS-6 – Direct jetting water from any direction shall not enter the enclosure (Water tight)
  • JIS-7 – Water shall not enter the enclosure when it is immersed in water under defined conditions (Immersion resistant)
  • JIS-8 – The equipment is usable for continuous submersion in water under specified pressure (Submersible)

IP Code (International Protection Rating)

The IP code is commonly used by business radios, and it contains a rating for resistance to both liquids and solids. With radios, solids typically refer to dust and other fine particles, but the IP code is designed to include larger objects. An IP rating has two digits, “IP54″ for example. The first digit (5 in the previous example) refers to resistance to solids. The second digit (4 in the previous example) refers to resistance to liquids.

Solids Resistance Levels (First Digit)
The following is the numeric resistance level, and the types of solids that are resisted at that level.

  • 0 – No protection against contact and ingress of objects
  • 1 – Any large surface of the body, such as the back of a hand, but no protection against deliberate contact with a body part (>50 mm)
  • 2 – Fingers or similar objects (>12.5 mm)
  • 3 – Tools, thick wires, etc. (>2.5 mm)
  • 4 – Most wires, screws, etc. (>1 mm)
  • 5 – Ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment; complete protection against contact
  • 6 – No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact

Liquids Resistance Levels (Second Digit)
These are similar to the JIS standard (above).

  • 0 – Not protected
  • 1 – Dripping water (vertically falling drops) shall have no harmful effect.
  • 2 – Vertically dripping water shall have no harmful effect when the enclosure is tilted at an angle up to 15 degrees from its normal position.
  • 3 – Water falling as a spray at any angle up to 60 degrees from the vertical shall have no harmful effect.
  • 4 – Water splashing against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effect.
  • 5 – Water projected by a nozzle (6.3mm) against enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
  • 6 – Water projected in powerful jets (12.5mm nozzle) against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
  • 7 – Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion).
  • 8 – The equipment is suitable for continuous immersion in water under conditions which shall be specified by the manufacturer. Normally, this will mean that the equipment is hermetically sealed. However, with certain types of equipment, it can mean that water can enter but only in such a manner that it produces no harmful effects.
