Alt.SXSW: Tron Light Cycles Realized

MAKE alt.SXSW content badgeThe concept for frog’s SXSW interactive opening party involved a  number of classic video games made physical to a greater or lesser extent.  My personal favorite was their take on the Tron light cycle duel, which I got a chance to play today at Austin Dorkbot’s SXSW Create event. (For purists, I should note that their implementation of the game allows for smoothly-radiused turns, instead of just sharp 90-degree cornering, so it’s more like the version of the game we saw in the 2010 Tron: Legacy remake.)

frog personnel Matt, Pat, and Jared worked together to create a “physical” version of the game, starting with two stationary exercise bikes.  Each was retrofit with an Arduino, a tachometer, a mechanical hand brake, and a set of steerable handlebars.  In play, two contestants direct their “Light Trikes”  by steering with the handlebars and peddling faster or slower to control speed.  Each contestant sits before a large monitor with a third-person view of his or her trike, in the digital arena, while an overhead “God’s eye” view is projected on a screen between them for onlookers.

The basic rules, of course, haven’t changed: Run these guys into your jet walls.

Here’s the 8th episode of MAKE‘s podcast, Make: Talk! In each episode, I interview one of the makers featured in the magazine.

Our maker this week is Kyle Machulis, a hardware and software hacker who led the team in making the reverse engineer drivers for the Microsoft Kinect. Kyle is also an avid self-tracker, which means he uses technology to measure different aspects of his health and biology.

Here’s what we talked about in this episode:

Windell and Lenore of Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories clued me into BarBot 2012, which started last night and continues tonight. If your dream is to have robots pour you mixed drinks, this is where you need to be tonight.

BarBot is a celebration of cocktail culture and man-machine interface. Get a drink from an actual robot. Chat up a snarky electronic bartender. Listen to some graceful tunes being played by robotic music makers. And, after downing your sixth martini, you can finally admit that it’s the geeks who shall inherit the earth.

These robots don’t clean the carpets. What they will do is much, much better. They make you a drink! Let your roommate do the vacuuming. These bots have got better programming on their mind.

MAKE Volume 20 Projects

When we first launched Make: Projects, our DIY library, a year and a half ago, one of our goals was to free up projects from past issues of MAKE, for the community to collaborate on. With 29 volumes of MAKE, we had some work to do, chipping away at entering projects in the system. We have over 450 projects from previous issues on Make: Projects for you to freely peruse, and we’re not stopping anytime soon. We’ve created pages for each of the past 10 volumes, giving you yet another way to browse. Some volumes have a lot of projects shared (like Volume 20, screen grab pictured above), and others will soon. Check out the pages for Volumes 19 through 29, linked below, and look for older issue pages coming soon. Enjoy!

Kinetica Art Fair Offers a Bevy of ArtBots

As a happily unrepentant artbot fanatic, I was overjoyed to see We Make Money Not Art’s two posts on the Kinetica Art Fair in London:

The Kinetica Art Fair brings together independent galleries, art organisations and curatorial groups who focus on kinetic, electronic, robotic, sound, light, time-based and multi-disciplinary new media art, science and technology. The art fair features installations, robots and small sculptures but also live performances, artists presentations, demos and a cheerful atmosphere that makes it easy to talk to the ‘exhibitors.’

The event takes place in London every year since 2009 but this was the first time i managed to be in town during the fair. Kinetica is as bazaar, as garage and as male-frequented as you might expect. There were a couple of interactive horrors “customizable to better suit the lobby of your luxury hotel”, and a few aesthetically questionable contraptions. It takes all sorts, as they say. However, i did see a number of projects which made it worth the visit.

Regine takes the time to explore all of the great works of art at this show — be sure to read both blog posts.

You Actually Can Put A Gun Rack In A Chevy Volt, Newt Gingrich

From our friends at Jalopnik:

One gun-totin’ Chevy Volt owner responded to Newt Gingrich’s claim that “you can’t put a gun rack in a Volt” in the best way possible. He built a gun rack and put it in his own Volt.

Politics aside, is there anything PVC can’t do?
