Individuals frequently have a good number of questions when a family member dies from sepsis. It turns out that sepsis is very common particularly in those who are older. It is in fact one of the leading reason patients die in hospitals. Thousands and thousands of patients die due to sepsis in the US every year.
Sepsis starts as a result of an infection. Common sources of infections include abdominal infections and bed sores. Such sources of infection are very common in elderly men and women in hospitals/nursing homes/rehabilitation facilities.
The most effective way we know of helping people survive sepsis is to treat the infection without any delay. In case the infection stays untreated it sepsis can progress as it progresses the patient’s chances of surviving go down. When the individual goes through septic shock the likelihood of survival plummets to roughly 50%.
Another category who have a higher risk of getting infections are cancer patients, for example, those with cancer of the breast. Cancer patients frequently need chemotherapy. Chemotherapy has the potential to compromise the individual’s immune system. For patients in this situation, infections can be a serious issue and can lead to sepsis. Also, chemotherapy might be given through a port which can also get infected. This same problem comes up with patients going through dialysis.
Anyone with an elderly family member in a hospital should be cognizant of the danger posed by infections and to speak with their doctor in the event they notice evidence of an infection or have any health related issues.
